ORIGINS
Saesenthessis, better known as Saskia among people, is a dragon and the only child of Green Dragon Myrgtabrakke and Golden Dragon Villentretenmerth. She is born during a famous dragon hunt in Caingorn, north of the Kestrel Mountains. The hatchling is in grave danger after Myrgtabrakke is poisoned and the dragon hunters journey to her lair, seeking glory and riches. With help from Geralt of Rivia, among others, Villentretenmerth defeats the attackers and rescues his daughter. The faith of his mate, however, remains unknown.From then on, Villen takes Saskia in his care. He teaches his daughter about equality, justice, and honor. He teaches Saskia to stand up for herself and others, to help whenever she can, to share, to love, and inspire the same values in others. Saskia's childhood is, for the most part, unremarkable. The little girl takes off every chance she has, roaming the woods, flying as far as her wings take her, running and playing and hunting. It is this rowdiness and free spirit of hers that land her in trouble.She is about twelve when she ventures into a human village all on her own for the first time. The events taking place here would leave Saskia with deep scars after she is captured by humans and she inadvertently kills them while only trying to scare them off to escape. It takes her a long time to heal, both physically and emotionally, but heal she does.A few short years later, her father leaves Saskia on her own, not out of negligence or cruelty, but because he taught her everything he deemed important to know and she is ready to fend for herself. Thus, young Saesenthessis begins to travel the world alone.
THE WITCHER 2: ASSASSINS OF KINGS
During her travels, Saskia meets Iorveth, the infamous Scoia'tael commander. Not much is known about their first meeting, but it is clear they respect each other deeply. Together, they come up with an alias– Saskia– and her entire history: she is from Aedirn and there she fought and killed a dragon, giving her the moniker Saskia the Dragonslayer.Word of her brave deeds and idealistic goals spread quickly throughout the kingdom of Aedirn and beyond, and she attracts many folks from all walks of life. Her ideas about freedom and equality impress people, as well as her compassion, kindness, and integrity, and soon they begin looking up to her as their leader. The city of Vergen in the Pontar Valley becomes the headquarters of Saskia and her allies. Here, she creates a unique situation where dwarves, humans, and elves live together as equals and work together toward common goals.Following the assassination of King Demavend III of Aedirn, King Henselt of Kaedwen decides to take advantage of the disarray and sends an invasive force to the Pontar Valley, intending to annex it. The late king's son, Stennis, and his noblemen join forces with the Dragonslayer and come to the city of Vergen to stop the invasion.Saskia is poisoned during a war council in Vergen. In the end, it is unclear who did it, though there is no lack of suspects: from the monk Olcan who had prophetic dreams about Saskia's double identity and believed her to be an evil beast to Prince Stennis who felt threatened by Saskia’s popularity among people to the duplicitous sorceress Philippa Eilhart.Philippa Eilhart, under the guise of waking Saskia up from the poison-induced coma, uses a spell on her that brainwashes Saskia and takes control of her, turning her into a tool to be used by the Lodge of Sorceress, both as a charismatic leader and a mighty dragon.When Henselt attacks Vergen, the battle is won by Saskia and her army, and the invaders are repelled. The free state of Upper Aedirn is founded, with Saskia as its elected queen.
THE THIRD NORTHERN WAR
After the upheaval at Loc Muinne, Saskia returns to Vergen and reveals to her people that she is a dragon. Most of the city's residents embrace her true identity and begin referring to her as The Dragon of Vergen. Her renown grows, as does her newly-founded state, and more people move in and around Vergen, the dwarves of Mahakam backing Saskia up as well.Not fully recovered from Philippa Eilhart's spell, Saskia (while in dragon form) unintentionally kills a group of dwarves. This only causes Barclay Els, a veteran of the battle at Brenna during the Second Nilfgaard War, to grow in his distrust of Saskia and her leadership.Sometime later, it is revealed that Barclay Els signed a treaty with Nilfgaard behind Saskia's back, promising neutrality and that the inhabitants of Vergen would let the army pass through their city. Naturally, the Vergeni refuse these terms, and when the Nilfgaardian army marches on, they refuse to let them pass. Despite everyone's best efforts, Vergen is quickly conquered and razed to the ground. Thus, Saskia's independent realm meets its end, along with most of its people.The distress and pain Saskia feels during these moments are unfathomable, and it is this tragic event that hurts Saskia so much and scrambles her mind so violently that it makes her snap out from under Philippa’s control for good.
POST-CANON
After the Third Northern War ends, regardless of its outcome, Saskia can be found in Skellige, on Ard Skellig. Here, she is trying to gain the support of the islanders and gather a new army in her pursuit to repel the Nilfgaardian invasion and/or to rebuild Upper Aedirn.

Her father was born into a wealthy Orlesian family but was disowned and cast off by them after choosing to marry an Avvar mercenary, Saskia’s mother. They found shelter in the Free Marches, where they took to animal husbandry and farming. Saskia was born and raised in Hasmal, where her parents would often help escaped slaves from Tevinter with shelter, food, clothes, money, etc. They both taught Saskia that there is no excuse for such heinous laws and acts and that everyone deserves freedom and a chance at a life of their own choosing. The young girl took their teachings to heart and would later grow up to continue what her parents had left behind after their deaths, and even take it further.Or so the story she tells most people goes.She achieved a modicum of renown after winning the Grand Tourney melee one year in her early 20s. Later on, rumors would begin spreading about Saskia having slain a high dragon all by herself, thus earning her the title Saskia the Dragonslayer. At the same time, at the initiative of one of the ex-slaves, an elven man, Saskia offered her childhood home and the lands surrounding it to be used as headquarters for a movement that would later brew into revolt and an attempt at claiming a piece of land from The Silent Plains to form an independent country.Saskia is not the rebellion leader here, she’s merely following orders as a soldier and guard, securing provisions and safe passage for the others, recruiting, and occasionally taking part in incursions deeper and deeper into Teviter territory. When the War of the Lions breaks out in Orlais, Saskia is tasked with traveling all the way to Orlais and recruiting all those caught in the crossfire, especially the servants of nobility, those living in slums, etc.In this verse, Saskia can be encountered anywhere in the Free Marches, Orlais, and Ferelden, and can be recruited by either the Warden, Champion, or Inquisitor. She is a dragon, but that fact is a secret she guards closely.

Saskia is asari, with a krogan parent. Her birth name is Saesen T’essis and she was raised on Cyone in the Kypladon system, a fortified and militaristic world. She’s a bit over 200 years old, which is still quite young by asari standards, and still in her ‘Maiden’ stage of life. She took on the name Saskia when she began her Justicar training and has since abandoned all material possessions except for her armor, weapons, vehicle, etc. She gained renown in asari society for being the youngest Justicar in recorded history, successfully completing her training with numerous feats of valor just before turning 200.She’s more inexperienced than other Justicars but extremely eager to fulfill her duty. She’s more self-disciplined and reserved than Saskia usually is in other verses and she falls under the Lawful Good alignment, rather than Chaotic Good. Otherwise, she’s still strong-willed, energetic, determined, and just a tad bit domineering.Regarding combat, she uses her biotic powers passively to enhance her strength, speed, stamina, etc., and prefers close quarters, her main weapon being a sword, assisted by an advanced VI system. She can be recruited by Shepard at any point in their journey.

Saskia was an N7 graduate specializing as Slayer and serving under the Systems Alliance until her dishonorable discharge. Later, she enrolled in the Andromeda Initiative for her feats of valor and deadly efficiency, despite her hot-headed and defiant streak. She was part of the Nexus' security and was directly involved in the Nexus Uprising as one of the rebellion's leaders. After following Sloane Kelly on Kadara and helping found the Outcasts, Saskia then grew disillusioned with the organization and its leadership, ending up leaving them to try and make it out on her own. She received the moniker 'the Dragonslayer' and became something of a local legend after defeating an Ancient Eiroch on her own with nothing but a blade. Nowadays she travels between Kadara and Elaaden, acting as a Vigilante and helping out other people however she can.In this verse, Saska can be recruited by the Pathfinder after she leaves the Outcasts or the Angaran Resistance. She can be found in the wilderness of Kadara and Elaaden.Alternatively, interactions can take place before the Andromeda Initiative leaves the galaxy.

Saskia runs a shelter called The Golden Dragon in Freeside, under the facade of being a motel, though it’s a rather well-known fact it’s much more than that. She welcomes and offers protection to all sorts of downtrodden people without asking for much in return. Her story is that the building has been in her family for a very long time and her father passed it on to her a few years back, though nobody seems to remember a time when it wasn’t administered by Saskia. Her shelter runs independently of the Kings or Followers, though she’s cooperated with both in the past.Saskia gained the respect of the local community after allegedly fighting and killing a deathclaw all by herself, thus earning her the Deathclaw Slayer moniker, though many doubt the veracity of this story. There are of course many more who would see Saskia’s shelter destroyed, but none have been able to disrupt her activity so far. Everyone knows The Golden Dragon is a well-guarded establishment, but if asked, nobody would be able to tell exactly by whom or what it is guarded.The truth is the Golden Dragon isn’t just a shelter; it’s a brewing rebellion, a network of informants, an army in training, and most importantly it’s a place where people can find hope and purpose. Much like in her original verse, Saskia’s goal is to establish an independent state where everyone can coexist peacefully, especially all those who wouldn’t be so readily accepted somewhere else– ghouls, synths, super mutants, the sick, destitute, elderly, orphans, etc.Saskia herself isn't what she seems either; she's much older than she looks– she’s over 200 years old in fact. Her father, known to most as Borch Three Jackdaws, is a ghoul. Their story goes a long way back, before the Great War. Saskia is biologically related to her father, just not in the traditional sense.Back then Borch was known as Villen. As the sole heir of a very old, very rich, very influential family, he chose to use his family’s wealth and status to fund research into nuclear medicine, anticipating a nuclear war. From here, his interest in medicine and science compelled him to get involved in this field as more than an investor. Soon he would become known as a brilliant medic and savant and open a private laboratory equipped with the best technology there was, all within a secure vault.Mere months before the Great War broke out, Villen met Myrthe, a fellow nuclear medicine scientist and single mother of a 4-year-old girl, Saskia. Villen and Myrthe became lovers quickly, but their newfound happiness wouldn’t last too long. The war broke out while Myrthe was away on a business trip and had left Saskia in Villen’s care. The two of them found shelter in Villen’s vault, but even so, Saskia still became ill from the radiation. Cue many long, painful years during which Villen did everything in his power to keep Saskia alive. Ultimately what it came to was exposing himself to radiation, promoting the ghoulification process, and “lending” Saskia his very genetic code, re-programming everything and hoping that her body would gain the ability to fight back the radiation. Even that wasn’t sufficient to bring her to a stable state, however, and it was at this point when Villen decided to begin replacing the parts of Saskia’s body affected by the radiation with cybernetic implants.Thus, Saskia became a cyborg, Villen a ghoul, and genetically speaking they’re more twins than father and daughter, but they do regard each other as such after everything they’ve been through. Although she is over 200 years old, Saskia has been out and about in the world for a much shorter amount of time and she has the maturity and life experience of someone in their late 20s.

Few have ever known the story of Letho's life before becoming a witcher, and none of them are still alive today. Where he came from, what his family was like, and who he might have grown up to be are all details lost to time, lost to Letho's memory too. He remembers, vaguely, that three older girls have taken him into their care, and they spent a couple of years together, surviving the war-torn graveyard their homeland had become after being conquered and assimilated into the Nilfgaardian Empire. He doesn’t remember their voices or faces– and sometimes he's not sure he remembers their names correctly either– but he remembers how brave they were. How capable and clever and resourceful. He also remembers that they were kind and compassionate, enough to take in an orphaned baby when the oldest of them was not even a teenager yet.Surviving the ruthless training and trials of the Viper School, Letho would go on to become directly involved in history-altering events across the Continent.In the forests of Angren on July 25, 1270, Letho was near death after being struck by a slyzard's tail, but Geralt of Rivia found and saved him while chasing after the Wild Hunt to rescue Yennefer. As thanks for saving his life, Letho told Geralt where to find the Wild Hunt and, alongside his own companions, traveled with him to find the spectral riders. Eventually, the group caught up with the Wild Hunt on the Winter Solstice, by the Hanged Man's Tree in Nilfgaard. Despite their skill, the witchers couldn't defeat all the warriors and a stalemate ensued before Geralt offered himself in exchange for Yennefer.Feeling it'd be disrespectful to Geralt to just leave the sorceress somewhere, Letho and the witchers took care of her. However, she was in pain, suffering from amnesia, and caused an endless source of trouble for the group, which, in the Nilfgaardian Empire, meant she was liable to get caught and killed. While the group traveled constantly to try and avoid attention, they were eventually detained and thrown in jail. However, Emperor Emhyr var Emreis himself later approached Letho and offered him a deal he couldn't refuse: sow chaos in the North by killing some of its rulers, lay the blame on the Lodge of Sorceresses, and the School of the Viper would be restored.

Oleksander's parents were part of a small Scoia’tael commando in Redania, his mother, Alisia, being a healer and his father, Estek, a scout. He was nearly a year old when they were both killed in battle, leaving him orphaned. Edyta, his mother’s closest friend and also healer for the same commando at the time, decided to abandon the Scoia’tael ranks so she could raise Oles safely.A curious and studious child, Oles picked up the basic notions of medicine and herbalism from Edyta early on, and then studied alchemy under Master Kalkstein and further honed his medical skills and knowledge in Oxenfurt.Currently, he runs his own shop of alchemical ingredients and works as an apothecary and nurse at Shani’s clinic in Oxenfurt. He also provides local Scoia’tael commandos with medical and alchemical supplies, and he does so of his own accord and without asking for anything in return-- a secret he guards closely. An even greater secret is that Oles cursed himself with lycanthropy while poking around ancient elven ruins and studying tomes of dubious origin.His hobbies include reading and scientific research in general. He’s more interested in alchemy than battlefield medicine (which Shani does a lot of, and whenever she’s out in the field, he begrudgingly manages the clinic for her.) At first, his interest in alchemy was a mere scholarly curiosity, but after becoming a werewolf, he zeroes in on finding a cure for himself despite the generally accepted belief that it can’t be achieved through alchemy alone. It has been centuries since the Tomicka family had left the snow-capped Mount Carbon to settle into gentler Redania; previously part of Clan Zigrin, they sought to practice their trade in the North's lowlands. Tailors, dressmakers, seamstresses, fabric dyers, merchants-- all driven and hard-working people, they soon established their shops all over the northern kingdoms, from the Dragon Mountains to the banks of the Yaruga.Such is the family Kaska was born into, neither the eldest nor the youngest-- or even the middle-- of eight children. Growing up, her parents often oscillated between overprotective and neglectful in a manner so unpredictable young Kaska had to learn how to look after herself and be prepared for anything.When she was old enough, Kaska's parents left her in charge of their shop near Oxenfurt while they took care of the bigger ones in Novigrad, and it took her less than two weeks to have them regret this decision. After nearly driving the family business into the ground, her mother stepped in, reducing Kaska's responsibilities to fabric dyeing, which Kaska herself finds much more reasonable.Her true passion, after all, is painting. Villentretenmerth is one of the very few known Golden Dragons in the entire history of the Continent. As he loves living amongst other creatures and is highly skilled in the art of polymorphism, he is able to assume many forms and travel incognito. One of his most well-known forms is that of Borch Three Jackdaws, an unassuming and soft-spoken knight, often accompanied by two Zerrikanian women, Téa and Véa. While traveling in this form, he never carries conventional weapons of any kind, saying that he could not, but never elaborating. He is the father of another famous dragon, Saesenthessis.Not much is known about the early years of Villentretenmerth, but he has always been known for traveling all over the world and never staying in one place for too long. He uses various forms during these travels to seamlessly blend in, but he is also known to occasionally travel in his true form. On one such travel, he met a Green Dragon known as Myrgtabrakke, whom he took as his mate. After some time together, he left her and continued traveling.
THE BOUNDS OF REASON
Villen, under the guise of Borch, met the famous witcher Geralt during one of his contracts. The witcher slew a basilisk, and Borch, accompanied by his two Zerrikanian bodyguards, Téa and Véa, intervened before the folks who had hired the witcher could pilfer his bags. He invited Geralt back to a nearby inn, using the opportunity to question the witcher on his personal philosophy, and was pleased to learn Geralt didn't hunt dragons.
Not long after, it became known that there was a large dragon in Barefield and a great hunt was preparing, and the group decided to join the hunting party: the famous dragon hunters Crinfrid Reavers, Dwarven master Yarpen Zigrin with his company, noble knight Eyck of Denesle, and mages Dorregaray and Yennefer. The party was commanded by Prince Niedamir and guided by a peasant named Sheepbagger.Borch immediately recognized the tension between the witcher and the sorceress Yennefer, but he kept that to himself, just like the real reason he wanted to join the hunt-- the dragon in question was none other than his mate, Myrgtabrakke.Borch assumed the role of an observer and simply watched the events unfold and tensions build over the group's different ideas about the dragon. After a while, he abandoned the group to take care of his own business. In his absence, the group was caught by a rockslide, throwing the witcher and the sorceress off the cliff. They were eventually saved by Eyck, who threw them a rope.After this, the group's situation grew worse as they began to constantly argue. During one such argument, however, they were interrupted by the loud roar of a dragon and, to their great surprise, it wasn't a green dragon that did it but a rather large, golden one. Though the group was in awe and could not believe their eyes at first, they eventually decided to continue on and kill the dragon.Before they could begin the hunt, however, the dragon-- using telepathy-- gave them two options: leave, or stay and fight in a fair duel. This was a perfect chance for the honorable Sir Eyck, who did not hesitate for a moment and attacked the dragon. Villentretenmerth proved to be extremely agile for one of such size and quickly disposed of the knight, sending him and his horse flying across the valley.
The dragon's quick victory caused the prince to abandon the quest and the Reavers to change their plan regarding the killing - they now wanted to kill the dragon themselves. This caused the group to be divided into two - those who wanted to kill the dragon and those who wanted to prevent it. The latter group consisted only of Geralt, Dandelion, and Dorregaray, and were thus easily overpowered by the others, tied up, and left behind. Yennefer seemingly takes the side of the Reavers and Yarpen's company but she quickly turns on them only to be knocked off and have her hands and fingers bound as well.Meanwhile, Villentretenmerth had observed all of this with rising impatience. When the Reavers and Yarpen finally attacked, the dragon was already charging and, though the hunting group made an impressive entrance into the fight, they were quickly defeated by the powerful beast. Eventually, it became clear what the dragon had been furiously guarding: his and Myrgtabrakke's newborn hatchling.Soon after Villen defeated the attackers, the local militia lead by Sheepbagger arrived. By their sheer numbers, they were able to momentarily incapacitate the dragon. Fortunately for him, Yennefer managed to free herself thanks to Geralt and used her spells against the mob while the two Zerrikanian women appeared and cut their way through the crowd before eventually freeing Villen, who promptly took off and killed Sheepbagger.After this, Villen ordered the dwarves to attend to the wounded Reavers and forbade Véa to attack Yennefer. When the fighting stopped, he assumed a human form again and revealed to all that he was actually the knight Borch Three Jackdaws. He then thanked Geralt and Yennefer for their help and made a rather cryptic comment about their relationship before changing back to his true form and flying off with his newborn.
LATER YEARS
He then spent many years raising his daughter, Saesenthessis. He taught her to care for others, to see them as equals, and to value freedom. After some time, Villen left her on her own as is common amongst dragons.After the Second Northern War, Borch was seemingly "captured" by a mercenary unit that was paid to bring him to the Queen of Zerrikania. In one of the taverns, he told them a long tale about Queen Meve's deeds during the guerilla warfare.Not much is known about him after this. Many years later, during the Kaedweni occupation of the Pontar Valley, Geralt met his daughter under the guise of Saskia.

ORIGINS
Little is known about Myrgtabrakke's early life. She was active during the beginning of the 13th century. During that time, Myrgtabrakke mated with the golden dragon Villentretenmerth, and the union produced one offspring— Saesenthessis.Myr made her nest near the city of Barefield, within the kingdom of Caingorn. It didn't take long for the local villagers to notice her. They could not accept a dragon in their midst, so they decided to hunt her down. A villager named Sheepbagger prepared a poisonous mixture of hellebore, belladonna, hemlock, sulfur, pitch, and tacks, and he stuffed a dead sheep with it. Myrgtabrakke took the bait and devoured the sheep whole in one bite. She then tried to fly off but could not. Instead, she fell to the ground, barely alive.Two of the villagers approached to confirm whether the dragon was truly dead. She killed them instantly, but was so weakened that she could only lick their blood and limp away, clearly in agony. The locals saw that they had managed to gravely wound the dragon, but that was not enough for them as they wanted her dead. Soon, a group of hunters assembled to finish the job and kill the dragon.Myrgtabrakke would have surely been killed if not for the intervention of her mate, Villentretenmerth, who stood between her, the newly born hatchling, and the attackers. The Golden Dragon used his magic at a crucial moment and, in effect, transferred Myrgtabrakke's soul into a human body. However, in doing so, he completely lost track of her and never learned what became of her. Ultimately, he was victorious in repelling the attacking forces and protecting his daughter, whom he took to him.At the same time as the dragon hunt, a young woman died in childbirth in a small village somewhere in Vellen. She was buried but did not stay buried for long. Bloodied and exhausted, Myrgtabrakke crawled her way out of the grave and back to her newborn daughter.
REBIRTH
Myr has been an enemy to the Crones ever since she tricked her way out of repaying a debt she owed them. They hate her and she hates them, but there's also a healthy deal of respect, if you can call it that, from both sides: they don't encroach on Myr's territory and she doesn't on theirs. She will, however, save any child she comes across that would otherwise fall prey to the Crones or even the likes of She-Who-Knows.Nowadays, Myr is a well-respected midwife in a small village in Velen. All children born under her care will have just a little bit of magic in them. They'll also be protected by Light-as-the-wind-heavy-as-the-earth, a spectral guardian not-dog, when they're in danger from all kinds of beasts and monsters, from the common wolf to the colossal fiend. However, his aid doesn't extend to harm that might come from other humans or human-like beings. That's a domain he has no power over.Myr, however, becomes somewhat of a bridge between the realms of humans and that of the beasts and primeval magic. Thus, folk magic is something that she can easily connect to and tap into, and it becomes clear to the people around her that she does indeed have a gift for welcoming children into this world. Rarely does a stillbirth occur when she's present, the mothers feel at peace with her around and claim that even the childbirth pains are alleviated. The children grow up big and strong and are seemingly favored by fortune.Moreover, it's not just humans Myr helps. Non-humans– elves, dwarves, halflings, etc.– sometimes come to request her aid, too. On more than one occasion, families have brought their beloved mares or some other gestating animal to be blessed by Myr, too. She takes everyone in.Word travels fast and soon enough, pregnant women from nearby villages all around come to Myr to ask for her assistance, or the families send for her to be brought to their homes if they're unable to travel. Myr's little cottage is well off the beaten path, deeper into the woods than the rest of the village she associates with, and she refuses to move somewhere closer to the main road or allow the villagers to cut off surrounding trees to make access easier. She claims that it's these woods that give her her gifts, and since everyone wants their children to live well, everyone complies– and quickly shuts off any accusations that she's a witch.And so she becomes known as the Midwife of the Wilds.

Frederica Lupei was born into a family of scientists and engineers, and so it came as no surprise when she showed an early aptitude for retaining and rapidly sifting through large amounts of data, as well as connecting the invisible dots other people seemed to miss. Yet for all their academic success and fulfilling home life, Fred's parents would not live long enough to see their daughter grow up into a full-fledged scientist.When Fred was five, both her parents were murdered while they were traveling back home from a months-long work trip in a remote location. A third coworker who was traveling with them at the time was charged with double homicide. The media and the rest of their coworkers painted the whole incident as some sort of love triangle situation and jealousy driving the man mad.The truth, however, was far darker, and it involved the Alta-Vitae gas, which back then was a project initiated by a handful of scientists on Earth with the intention of distributing it to all colonies struggling with food supplies, all over the galaxy. Before the project was even halfway finished, the Halcyon Holdings Corporate Board acquired exclusive access to all research from the Earth Directorate for a very large sum of money. The scientists working on Alta-Vitae were either bought in exchange for their silence or eliminated if they put up any resistance-- Fred’s mother, Dr. Eilidh Lupei, was one of those scientists. Her father was also involved in the project, but only as a handyman working at the same station.Fred was raised by her grandparents from then on, and when she was old enough to put two and two together, she attempted to get in touch with the supposed murderer of her parents (in truth, another scientist who opposed the Board, the same way Eilidh had), but only a few weeks later after she started poking around, he was found dead in his prison cell.Fred never quite managed to unravel the whole mystery while on Earth. There were too many missing pieces as she never learned about Alta-Vitae and the Halyon Board getting their hands on the project. He had to give away his mother's wedding band, one of the few possession he had managed to keep hidden from his father, to convince a woman from town to post his letter.Not even a week later, Ecaterina, his grandmother, arrived. The confrontation between her and Barbu ended in bloodshed-- the woman shot her son-in-law dead and rushed her grandson to grab whatever he could and run. They fled Strawberry together, pursued by lawmen and all those who realized what had happened, escaping in the forests of Big Valley.The two became inseparable. Bogdan told his grandmother everything that had happened-- Mioara's death, Barbu's abuse, James. Ecaterina swore to protect him and never allow anyone to lay a hand on him again. For years, they traveled together, always on the run, and Ecaterina taught Bogdan all she felt he needed to know-- from how to care for his stead to how to kill with his bare hands.Eventually, they parted ways when Bogdan was old enough to travel on his own. Since then, he tried to put his past behind him and live an honest life-- which, he had learned, Ecaterina was not. His grandmother had been an outlaw for longer than he'd been alive. Bogdan, however, sought to work and settle down. He did a bit of everything: all kinds of work on every ranch that would take him in, working in stables and even a mine once, fishing and hunting, cleaning floors in saloons, and so on. Yet nothing called to him like shepherding did.Nowadays, the cycle of transhumance dictates every aspect of Bogdan's life. It's a satisfying life, but a lonely one and he often goes months without any sort of social contact. It's easier in spring and summer when he's high on the mountain with his sheep and dog, where everything is peaceful and quiet, and time seems to move slower. The autumns and winters are more difficult to bear for Bogdan. When he's down in the foothills, everything feels stifling again, the way it used to when he was a child. It's these dark months with cold weather and long nights when Bogdan turns to drugs with sedative effects to quell the loudness of his thoughts and to alcohol to be able to sleep, all while waiting eagerly for the return of spring.

Ecaterina was born to Luminiţa and Zaharia Aman on 30th of January, 1832 in Țara Românească (Wallachia). She was born with a caul covering her head, which in Romanian folklore is a bad omen, signifying that the child would grow up into a cruel and violent person, would live a life full of sin and misdeeds, and then turn into a strigoi upon death.Her parents were not very superstitious back then, but Ecaterina’s grandmother was, and when she saw the newborn, it was a frightening sight for her to witness. She would go on to try to convince the parents to sell their child because she was ‘marked by the devil’ and sooner or later he would come to reclaim her. None of this mattered for Luminița and Zaharia, and they promised each other they would raise Ecaterina well and she would turn into an honorable person.Throughout Ecaterina's childhood, nothing significant happened. Still, her grandmother would call her drac împielițat (hellion / imp; literally accursed devil) as she still believed Ecaterina to be some sort of demon just waiting to damn them all. As a rowdy and mischievous child, Ecaterina would often use this against her grandmother to play pranks on her or simply scare her into leaving her and her parents alone. Her parents chided her for being unkind to her grandmother, but mostly found it amusing and didn’t actually do anything to punish Ecaterina.Her grandmother would then pass away, and Ecaterina and her parents emigrated out of what is known nowadays as Romania but was under the Ottoman Empire occupation back then. They spent about half a year in France, homeless and always on the move, waiting for an opportunity to travel overseas to America. Such an opportunity arose when a ship belonging to Luther Covington, steel magnate, arrived, looking for workers to transport abroad to the bustling Saint Denis. Ecaterina’s parents, like many others, saw this as an opportunity to start over in the rapidly growing world of America and the security of a wage, as part of the deal was signing a contract for twenty years. Of course, not speaking English, many of the details of what this entailed were lost on them. Still, they accepted. And so Ecaterina, now thirteen, and her parents ended up working on a small ranch outside of Saint Denise for Covington.
Falling in with the Red Reeds
Fast forward to when Ecaterina turned sixteen. At this point, she was already sick and tired of milking cows and feeding horses and fixing fences all day. Growing increasingly restless, she sought adventure, thrills, and a more interesting life than working on the ranch all day long for seventeen more years. One day, she simply ran away from home. Leaving no message for her parents, no hint of where she went.Enticed by the prospect of leading a free life, full of adventure, Ecaterina chose the outlaw lifestyle. At that time, she didn't know what that meant exactly, but would soon realize once she fell in with Roland 'Razor' Reed's gang of outlaws, known for their bloody and sadistic streak and based in Bluewater Marsh.Her parents loved Ecaterina dearly and this was a hard blow to recover from. Her father wanted to assure his wife that they’d find her, bring her back home safe, that surely she must have been kidnapped for ransom. Yet her mother knew Ecaterina better. Knew she was restless and unsatisfied and always sought something different than the life they could offer her. Knew that she likely left of her own accord. Still, she didn’t say anything to her husband, allowing him to find the strength to move forward by believing their daughter would never run away without saying a word to them like that.Time passed– months, almost a year– and then rumors and gossip began surfacing. That the young girl who disappeared mysteriously one night some time ago was now running with Roland Reed’s gang, the Red Reeds. That not only was she associated with them, but actively taking part in robberies and shootouts. Her parents wouldn’t believe this was their Ecaterina until an ambush by lawmen captured a member of the Red Reeds, questioned him, and obtain information about the gang, including the names and descriptions of other members.And then they lost their daughter a second time. This time, the confirmation hurt more than not knowing. Together, they set out to find her, going straight to the gang’s last known location. And indeed there she was– they begged her to come back, to return to them, promised that they would do better, they would all take a vacation somewhere far from Saint Denis, they would buy her a gown like the ladies in the city wore, or perhaps she wanted a new steed. Nothing moved Ecaterina or convinced her, neither the promises nor the desperate tears and pleas of her parents. She refused to return and told them to turn back and go home. This was all Roland needed to hear, and he immediately shot both of them, killing them instantly in front of Ecaterina’s eyes. Her mother’s last words as Roland took out his gun and aimed were calling Ecaterina a strigoaică– exactly what her grandmother had feared she would become all those years ago.

Ecaterina would run with the Red Reeds for six years, following them out in the far West. In time, she learned how to believe in the outlaw life in earnest, in ideals of freedom from the restraints of society and living according to one's own moral code. Like all fellow members, she received a mark on her left check-- an R, cut and burnt into her skin so the scar would never heal-- as well as a new name, Ruth Reed. She would later earn the nickname Striker as well, due to how sharp and quick she was with a gun, striking as fast and deadly as lightning.She never spoke of what had transpired between her and the rest of the gang, but she returned in Saint Denis, alone, in 1855, intending to go straight.At the same time, a young doctor by the name of Dimitrie Filimon was trying to open a practice in the city, only to be repeatedly denied by the authorities due to his immigrant status. Eventually, Dimitrie was pushed to start running an illegal clinic right under the law's nose, offering his services for much lower prices than established doctors, and most importantly, never turning anyone who needed help. One night, it was Ecaterina who stumbled into his clinic. Under such circumstances, Dimitrie could hardly judge Ecaterina's past and soon they would become close, fall in love, and marry.For a while, everything was going well-- Ecaterina managed to settle down like she had wished, having a loving husband, a warm home, and even a daughter, Mioara. Fate had it that Ecaterina would not enjoy this life for long, though. Her past caught up with her: members of the Red Reeds found her, thrashed her husband's clinic, and kidnapped him to draw her out. She managed to kill them and bring Dimitrie home safely, but this was when she realized her family would never be safe with her around.Thus, she decided to leave, despite her husband's insistence that they could leave the city and start anew somewhere else. Ecaterina now knew better that such a fanciful dream was simply not possible for someone like her. The next year, she would find Ronald Reed himself and kill him as a warning to all other remaining members that they would follow the same fate if they ever sought her out again.From then on, she began traveling alone, even the drifter. She took up bounties where she found them, worked as a hired gun, and gave Saint Denis a wide berth, despite missing her husband and daughter terribly.

Many years have passed before Ecaterina dared to contact her daughter. Dimitrie had passed away in the meantime; Miora grew up, married a man named Barbu Cantemir, and gave birth to a son, Bogdan. Ecaterina tracked them down to the town of Strawberry in West Elizabeth, and although she didn't expect to find a grandson, she was beyond happy to meet the toddler. Mioara asked her to stay with them, to reconnect, get to know each other, and make up for all this time spent apart, but the best Ecaterina could do was to give her a contact name to write to her. The memory of what had happened the last time she'd tried to live a normal life never faded from Ecaterina's memory, and she would not make the same mistake twice.Mioara did write to her mother, often. Telling her about Bogdan, about her life in Strawberry, about her late father, and then later about how her married life turned sour when Barbu turned into a violent and abusive man. Each time, Ecaterina read the letters and never replied to them, never visited again. Mioara's letters became desperate pleas for her mother to come back, and then they stopped entirely.Years later, when she received another letter it was from Bogdan, her grandson. The boy told her about Mioara's suicide, his father's abuse, and-- not unlike his mother-- begged her to come and rescue him. This time, Ecaterina could not bear the guilt and shame anymore and arrived in Strawberry only days later. She killed Bogdan's father, took no excuses from him, and didn't believe him deserving of living any longer. Then, pursued by the law and locals, escaped with Bogdan into the wild forests of Big Valley.For the next five years or so, Bogdan was Ecaterina's focus-- her purpose and redemption, too. She taught him how to defend himself, how to fish and hunt and live out in the wilderness, how to ride and care for a horse. When the young man expressed his wish to venture off into the world on his own, Ecaterina let him go, remembering her own wish to be independent in her youth, but the two remained in touch and met frequently.Nowadays, Ecaterina's life is slower but no less dangerous. She drops by Bogdan's sheep farm whenever she's nearby, often wounded or with the law on her trail, or both.
